Strasbourg, France

Trips & Activities

Student life in France centers around the city rather than on the university campus. BCA provides information on sports clubs, opportunities to volunteer, discounted theater tickets and other student activities.

One of the benefits of studying abroad with BCA is the excursions offered to the students throughout the semester. These short trips are included in the program fee.

  • Bike trip to Kehl Germany
  • Overnight trip to Metz and Verdun, tour of World War I battlefields
  • Tour of the Hospices de Strasbourg wine cellar
  • Tour of the Grand Seminaire and the medieval library collection
  • Tour of the Council of Europe
  • Trip to Le Struthof concentration camp and hike to prehistoric site at Le Donon
  • Attend RC Strasbourg professional soccer match

Student Experiences

Creative Movement

Student Name: Alison Cohen, Elizabethtown College, Fall 2008

Organization: Creative Movement

Contact Information: Marc Bloch University

Description: My Creative Expression class was most definitely the excitement of the week, even though it was an 8 am class!!!  It was all about moving the way you feel and making your own signature dance moves.  As a class final, the other Americans and I made our dance to a few different songs and performed it in front of the French students and professor. It was really neat!!!  I'm not the best dancer at all, but I really enjoyed interacting with the French students, watching our hysterical long haired French professor, and learning some new dance moves.  It was definitely nothing like I had ever expected, but completely worth the unique experience. I would encourage all future students to try something new, even with another American friend!!  As the French professor told me on the last day, "one day, you will become a swan!"  I didn't know all the moves, but I enjoyed the experience!!!

Tennis Class

Student Name: Alison Cohen, Elizabethtown College, Fall 2008

Organization: Tennis Class

Contact Information: Sports Arena (SIUAPS) on the university campus.  (http://www.strascity.com/strasbourg/etudiants/siuaps-strasbourg.php)

Description: I really wanted to play tennis while I was in France so my BCA friend and I signed up for a tennis class.  We loved the class even though we occasionally followed the wrong directions because they were explained quickly in French, but we made some French friends too! The class was with all French students in their sports arena (SIUAPS) on the university campus. I learned from this that tennis is universal and is almost more valued in this small town in France since there weren't as many opportunities to play as there are in the US. I loved playing with the class, as competition among players was generally friendly rather than harsh.

Jazz Dance Class

Student Name: Katie Bonnar, Elizabethtown College, Fall 2008

Organization: Jazz Dance Class

Contact Information: The dance studio building (they also have karate, boxing, tennis, and all sorts of stuff). Sign up on the first day of class.

Description: I was involved in two dance classes, one was for credit and the other was not.  It was a jazz dance class. Anyone could join - we had international students, French students, and even an older French man that came to learn how to dance.  Our instructor was really good - we would do a bunch of warm-ups each day and then she would continue teaching us the choreographed movements of a dance that we added onto each day. Personally, I loved taking the dance class.  It helped me experience a different side of French culture and to meet other French students around my age.  We met two really nice French girls there that helped us a lot and didn't mind helping us practice our French either. It was interesting to see how a basic dance, like jazz, translated into French, when it's a universal type of dance.  It was really cool to obey commands and complete movements in a different language when you knew what you were doing through years of American practice.
