Host University

The University of Veracruz was founded in 1944 and has since become the most prestigious university in the province of Veracruz and one of the top five universities in Mexico.  The university encompasses 32 departments, 22 centers of research, a foreign language center, a school for foreign students, a child music education center, athletic facilities, and a library and information services system.

All BCA Mexico students participate in BCA's program in cultural orientation and intensive language instruction prior to the start of regular classes.

After completing this pre-semester course, students choose their courses in conjunction with the BCA resident director.  Most students in Xalapa will take courses through the Escuela para Estudiantes Extranjeros (The EEE, or the School for Foreign Students) of the University of Veracruz.  BCA also offers two special courses only available to BCA students.  These are Social Problems and Social Action in Mexico, taught by BCA's Resident Director, and The Global Conversation, an on-line course that looks at some of the most pressing problems facing modern civilization.

In addition, students with advanced Spanish skills may enroll in regular classes at the academic departments of the University of Veracruz.  As a general rule of thumb, students should have the equivalent of about four semesters of college level Spanish to consider taking courses in the regular university.  Please contact the Resident Director if you have any questions about taking courses in the university's academic departments.

During the semester, students are expected to attend all classes and complete all work assigned in class.  All assignments must be completed by the end of the semester.
