Bridging the World Through Education

"This picture was taken at Ready English, a Chinese primary school focused on teaching kids English as a second language. During my study abroad in Dalian, China, I taught 3 and 4 year old children. I taught them English vocabulary as well as different aspects about life in America. This picture was taken at the school on my last day of work. The kids and I wanted to take a silly picture together so I could show my American friends the children I taught while in China. The kids’ English names from left to right are: David, Tony, Sunny, Betty, Kevin, Harry, Johnson, and Bruce. The kids have such a special place in my heart. Meeting and interacting with these children was one of best highlights of my trip to China. I will never forget their eagerness and hard work to learn English as well as the fun that transcended language and cultural barriers."

Connecting Dreams

"This picture was taken after Maria (pictured) and I exchanged the boxes that we made for each other out of Popsicle sticks. Inside of each box we were told to write our dream or ambition. When we exchanged boxes, we found out that we shared the same dream to be a doctor someday! We spent the next hour talking about becoming doctors. She told me that her mother is very ill and she wants to be able to help people like her. I was able to give her encouragement that I hope will lead her to achieving her dream."

Connect by Learning

"This was taken at the second elementary school visit that BCA students were invited to.  Part of the visit was spent with each of us spending time with a small group of students.  It gave us a chance to directly interact and talk to the students.  This picture was taken during a “show and tell” session.  The girl in the picture has been practicing Kendo (Japanese sword fighting) for several years, and brought it in to share.  She even brought in an extra practice sword to give me a quick lesson in it."

Acting For Justice Through Unity

"This picture was taken on Thanksgiving Day in China. The students from BCA celebrated Thanksgiving together some Chinese handicapped people. The physically disabled people at the Thanksgiving dinner were a part of an organization called EnSun. This company is so neat because EnSun hires solely handicapped people to work in telecommunications in order to give these usually ostracized people jobs. The handicapped man three in from the left of the picture is the director of EnSun. We all sat together for our Thanksgiving dinner and talked about the company, the opportunities presented for the handicapped people as a result of EnSun, life in China, and also sang karaoke together. I will always remember this Thanksgiving as it was the most unique and memorable Thanksgiving of my life. The meal was a one-of-a-kind Thanksgiving meal. We had the traditional turkey, ham, and mashed potatoes with a Chinese twist. We had jiaozi (dumplings), boiled peanuts, a Chinese version of a salad, and some oranges and bananas. It was also funny eating mashed potatoes and turkey/ham with chopsticks! I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to attend this Thanksgiving dinner because I saw first-hand, the love, joy, and dedication of the disabled Chinese."
